Vac-outs

In vented attics, insulation can become dirty. Air from dusty crop fields and from greasy streets passes freely over and through the attic space, depositing pollutants onto the exposed insulation. The humidity in the outside air condenses onto cooler surfaces within the attic and causes even more issues. Additionally, whether we like to admit it or not, mice are everywhere. They love to burrow into the insulation for the same reasons we like to live in an insulated home, it is warm.

But mice aren’t the only animals that like to occupy your attic space: Squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, opossums, birds, and bats all can find their way into that safe and cozy spot above our homes. Perhaps the most common animal found in Arkansas attics are snakes. Snake skins are so prevalent in homes we visit, we almost can calculate the added R-value from them. All of these animals have two things in common: they poop and they pee.

As your home breathes it filters through this material like wearing a mask that has never been washed or replaced. It also weighs down the drywall ceilings as it gets heavier from dirt and moisture.

Old, dirty insulation can be sucked out of homes by using a vacuum that would make even Tim the Tool Man Taylor proud. This process can be expensive as it requires specialized equipment, carrying off the old material, and lots and lots of labor. If you live in an older home and are concerned about improving air quality within the home this is a great investment into your health and future.
